How to Make a Balloon Garland (Step-by-Step)
Share
Balloon garlands look expensive but are easy to DIY — and no helium needed. Here's how.
What you need
- 5" and 11" latex balloons in 3–4 colours + a metallic
- Balloon decorating strip, glue dots and a hand pump (accessories)
- Optional focal point: a foil number or letter
(Not sure how many balloons? See our balloon quantity guide.)
Step by step
- Air-fill balloons in a mix of sizes (a hand pump is your friend).
- Tie balloons into clusters of 4 ("quads").
- Thread each quad's necks through a hole in the decorating strip.
- Push clusters close together, alternating colours, for a full look.
- Fill gaps with 5" balloons on glue dots.
- Add your focal foil balloons, then hang using the strip's holes.
Pro tips
- Mix matte + metallic for depth.
- Air-filled garlands last days to weeks — build the day before, no problem.
- Odd numbers of colours look more organic than even.
FAQ
Do balloon garlands need helium? No — air-filled balloons on a decorating strip last much longer and hold shape. How far ahead can I make one? A day or two ahead is fine for air-filled garlands. How many balloons do I need? Roughly 55–70 per 2m — see our quantity guide.
